History

A community cornerstone past, present and future

The Y is more than just your local pool, childcare or gym. We are a supportive, nonprofit community center that strives to meet everyone’s wellness needs so we can all live a little healthier. We empower people to learn, grow and thrive through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

In 1921, the YMCA of Metuchen, Edison, Woodbridge and South Amboy opened on the corner of Lake Avenue and High Street in Metuchen. The original building was funded by local business owner Charles Edgar of Edgar Clay and Mineral. Over the years, we’ve grown and changed with the times, but the warmth and support Mr. Edgar envisioned for our community remains alive today.

From that very first branch in Metuchen, we’ve expanded to two additional branches in Edison and South Amboy, along with an outdoor pool, ten childcare centers and ten day camps. That makes your Y the largest provider of childcare services in Middlesex County, giving working parents a safe and enriching environment for their children.

Over 1,000 dedicated volunteers help make the Y what it is today, serving the unique needs of more than 35,000 of your friends and neighbors every year. And while every Y is different, we all share a common bond — our people. We bring men, women and children, like you and your family, together to help you realize what you can achieve.

Let's celebrate our success together. Join us we could use someone like you!
