How the YMCA Helps Older Adults Stay Active and Connected: A Message from our CEO

Mar. 15, 2026

Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to join YMCA leaders from across the country in Washington, D.C. for YMCA National Advocacy Days. One topic that stood out in many conversations was the growing concern around social isolation, especially among older adults.

At the YMCA of MEWSA, we see every day how important it is to create spaces where people can stay active and connected. Programs designed for active older adults are not just about health and wellness. They help people build friendships, find routine, and feel part of a community.

Across our branches, older adults gather for programs like SilverSneakers, EnhanceFitness, chair yoga, and senior spin. They also come together for creative and social opportunities like adult art classes, Togetherhood service projects, and some friendly competition on the pickleball courts.

Activities like Pickleball have become especially powerful tools for connection. It is not uncommon to see players arrive early, stay late, and build lasting friendships on and off the court. The same can be said for our art classes and community volunteer projects, where people share their talents and give back together.

Supporting the health and well-being of older adults is an important part of the YMCA mission. When people have a place where they feel welcome, active, and connected, it strengthens the entire community.

I encourage you to visit the Y and see these programs in action. You will quickly see that the YMCA is more than a place to work out. It is a place where community happens.
